The top 5 Christmas adverts of 2022

Once again, it’s that time of the year. December has finally arrived, so park yourself on the sofa and prepare yourself for an abundance of epic festive advertisements!

While Christmas is still the season to be sentimental – 2022’s merry offerings display more thematic diversity than previous years – ranging from the heartwarming to the outright hilarious. In this week’s blog, we’re rounding up the best adverts of the year, thus far!

5. LEGO

This year, LEGO has gone all out for its 2022 Christmas campaign. The brand has abandoned the festive cliché of sleigh bells, snowy streets and open fires – instead, they’ve opted for a high-octane commercial, featuring children delivering presents on a monster truck/space shuttle/castle hybrid! With pop star Katy Perry at the forefront, clad in a typically colourful dress constructed from the famed Danish toy – this is the first celebrity-led LEGO campaign.

4. M&S

M&S’s festive offering for 2022 celebrates togetherness and community. It features various families exchanging gift – every time a M&S product is received, there is an unexpected occurrence that draws them outside. By the end of the advert, each household is standing outside watching in amazement as singers, musicians and entertainers perform in the snow.

Set to Harry Styles’ “Treat People with Kindness”, the choir features real-life community groups who will benefit from M&S donations — including Hertfordshire-based bikers with hearts of gold and brass bands from Bolton.

3. Aldi

Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot has become a festive favourite we look forward to seeing on our screens at this time of year and the latest chapter is a delight. After releasing its social media teaser the week before, viewers were kept on a cliffhanger after we watched Kevin miss his flight to Paris. Inspired by the holiday classic movie, Home Alone, Katie the Carrot is seen sitting comfortably on the plane before realising Kevin isn’t there.

Separated from his family, the scene cuts to Kevin, who is Home Alone. He is watching the big game on TV, when he hears heavy footsteps of an unknown intruder on the roof. ‘Quaking in his roots’, he devises a plan to warn off the uninvited guest. What follows is a series of fun, incident-packed exchanges between Kevin and the intruder – culminating in a finale where the identity of the intruder is finally revealed.

2. Amazon

Amazon’s annual Christmas ad campaign is a real tear-jerker. In ‘Joy Is Made,’ viewers see a young child completely captivated by a festive snow globe. Carrying the ornament everywhere, from school to the dentist’s office, the youngster’s father begins to notice the obsession and wants to add to the magic.

The song featured is “You Hold Me Up”, a new release by US Indie artist The Bones of J.R. Jones and the commercial was directed by famed filmmaker Taika Waititi.

1. ASDA

Although many love It’s a Wonderful Life, Love Actually and Die Hard – a 2020 survey by YouGov found the UK’s favourite Christmas film of all time was Elf. ASDA’s TV spot sees Will Ferrell’s character of Buddy from the 200 film apply for a job at the British supermarket, with shots from the film expertly cut into the ad so viewers can follow his journey to securing the role.

The result is seamless and adds a Hollywood feel to ASDA’s Christmas celebration. We think it’s our favourite festive offering of 2022!
